International Mobility & Work Placements in Malta
Course outline Prices & course dates
Learn in a real workplace. Build practical skills. Experience Malta
Take your learning beyond the classroom with a professionally organised work placement in Malta.
Alpha School coordinates international mobility and work-placement programmes for students and trainees coming to Malta through Erasmus+, VET mobility, PCTO and other recognised education and training programmes.
Rather than simply finding somewhere for you to "work", we aim to match you with a placement where you can practise relevant skills, work towards agreed learning outcomes and gain meaningful experience in an international environment.
Most participants spend approximately 7 hours per working day at their placement, depending on the agreed programme and workplace timetable.
Work placements are normally unpaid and are organised as supervised learning experiences, not as employment.
Your Placement. Your Learning Goals.
Every practise is different.
Before confirming a placement, we look at:
- your field of study or vocational specialisation
- the learning outcomes of your mobility programme
- your existing skills and previous experience
- your English level
- your age and placement duration
- the type of professional experience you would like to gain
- the duties and supervision genuinely available at the workplace
We then aim to match you with an appropriate external organisation in Malta.
You will receive information about your confirmed workplace, supervisor, working times, typical duties and learning focus before your placement begins.
More than work experience
A successful mobility should give you something you can take forward into your studies and future career.
Depending on your placement, you may develop and demonstrate skills such as:
Professional Communication
Communicating appropriately with colleagues, customers, guests or visitors and using English in real workplace situations.
Teamwork & Intercultural Communication
Working with people from different backgrounds, contributing to a team and adapting your communication to an international workplace.
Organisation & Time Management
Following a professional timetable, managing tasks, working accurately and developing greater independence and responsibility.
Customer & Visitor Service
Understanding how organisations welcome, assist and communicate with customers, guests and visitors.
Digital & Administrative Skills
Using appropriate workplace systems and digital tools, organising information and supporting routine and administrative processes.
Problem Solving & Initiative
Responding appropriately to everyday workplace situations, asking for support when necessary and becoming more confident in a professional environment.
Professional Behaviour
Developing punctuality, reliability, workplace awareness, responsibility and respect for professional standards.
Sustainability & Community Awareness
Exploring responsible workplace practices, sustainable tourism, heritage protection and responsible consumption where relevant to the placement.
Your exact skills focus and expected learning outcomes are agreed for your individual placement.
Work-Placement Opportunities
Placement availability depends on the particular profile, learning objectives, dates and suitable approved workplaces.
Possible areas include:
- Hospitality & Tourism
- Hotels & Guest Services
- Retails, Sales & Customer Service
- Business, Administration & Office Support
- Marketing & Digital Support
- ICT & Digital Techonologies
- Museums, Heritage & Visitor Services
- Creative Industries & Media
- Fitness & Sport - reception and customer service roles
- Sustainability & Environmental Services
- Other suitable vocational areas on request
Some professional environments or duties are regulated, safety-sensitive or unsuitable for student mobility placements. We therefore assess each request individually and only confirm duties that can be appropriately supervised.
A particular company, role or set of duties cannot be guaranteed until the placement has been matched and confirmed.
Who can apply?
Our work placements are designed primarily for participants undertaking an approved educational or vocational mobility programme, rather than people looking for casual work in Malta.
Before we can confirm placement, we will normally require evidence from your school, college, university, vocational training provider or other recognised sending organisation confirming your participation and the purpose of the mobility.
Depending on your programme, you may be:
- a student or learner currently enrolled with a recognised education or vocational training provider
- an apprentice or vocational trainer
- an eligible recent graduate participating through an approved mobility programme
- a participant in an Erasmus+, VET, PCTO, or comparable structured education or training mobility
Your placement must have a genuine learning or vocational -development purpose.
The appropriate Learning Agreement, placement agreement or equivalent documentation must be agreed by the relevant parties before the placement begins.
Applicants who are not participating through an education, training or recognised mobility framework should contact us before applying so that we can confirm whether an appropriate placement arrangement is possible.
International Participants
Placement may be available to both EU and non-EU participants.
However, immigration, visa and residence requirements depend on your nationality, programme, age and length of stay. Where applicable, the required immigration documentation must be in place before the placement begins. A work placement is not a job and does not in itself give a participant permission to undertake paid employment in Malta.
What happens before you arrive?
1. Tell us about your mobility
Your sending organisation provides us with the proposed dates, programme requirements, vocational area and intended learning outcomes.
2. Send us your participant profile
We normally require your CV together with information about your studies, experience, English level and professional interests. Depending on the placement, Alpha or the prospective workplace may also arrange a short online interview before the placement is confirmed.
3. We match the placement
We consider your profile and learning objectives and identify an appropriate workplace. Placement providers are reviewed before a placement is confirmed.
4. Your learning plan is agreed
Your placement sector, typical activities, skills focus, expected learning outcomes, timetable and supervision arrangements are confirmed.
5. Complete the mobility documentation
The required agreement between the relevant participant, sending organisation and receiving/placement organisations must be completed before the mobility starts.
6. Arrive in Malta
Alpha provides practical information and support to help you settle in and prepare for your first working day.
During your placement
You will work according to an agreed timetable, typical around 7 hours per working day, although exact hours depend on the mobility programme and workplace.
Your workplace will provide a named supervisor and Alpha will remain your mobility contact throughout the placement.
We monitor the placement to check that:
- you have started successfully
- the agreed duties and timetable are being followed
- you are receiving appropriate supervision
- you are developing the intended skills
- your learning outcomes remain achievable
- any concerns or necessary changes are addressed
Changes to your workplace, duties or agreed timetable should always be arranged through Alpha rather than agreed informally with the workplace.
Attendance & successful completion
International mobility is a professional learning experience and regular attendance is essential.
Alpha requires at least 90% verified attendance of the final agreed placement hours for successful completion and Alpha certification.
Participants are expected to arrive on time, follow workplace rules, behave professionally and inform both the workplace and Alpha promptly in the event of sickness, lateness or another problem affecting attendance.
Your learning outcomes
A placement test is not assessed simply by counting the number of hours you attended.
At the end of your mobility, we look at the learning outcomes achieved and the skills you demonstrated, using evidence such as:
- verified attendance and hours
- workplace supervision feedback
- completion of agreed duties
- participation reflection and feedback
- other appropriate evidence from the placement
This helps turn your experience into a clear record of what you have actually learned and demonstrated.
Your Alpha completion documentation can record your placement details, verified hours, attendance and key skills demonstrated. Your sending organisation remains responsible for formal academic or vocational recognition and for Europass Mobility where applicable.
Add English to your mobility
Would you like to develop your English as well as your professional skills?
A General English course at Alpha School can be added to your mobility programme where the timetable allows.
This is optional: you do not need to book an English course in order to take part in an eligible work-placement programme.
English lessons can be particularly useful before or alongside a placement if you would like more confidence communicating with colleagues, customers or visitors in an international workplace.
Learning beyond the workplace
International mobility is also about discovering another country, meeting new people and developing confidence outside your usual environment.
Alpha can build additional learning experiences into group mobility programmes, including:
- employability and CV workshops
- communication and interview skills
- sustainability and environmental activities
- cultural and heritage experiences
- digital and AI workshops
- team-building and outdoor learning
- organised activities and excursions in Malta
These can be selected according to the objectives and budget of your mobility project.
For schools, colleges & mobility coordinators
Planning a group mobility in Malta?
Alpha can coordinate the programme with your organisation from the initial planning stage through to placement matching, pariticipant support, monitoring and completion documentation.
We can work with you to establish:
Participants profiles → Learning outcomes → Suitable placements → Practical arrangements → Monitoring → Evaluation
For Erasmus+ and other funded programmes, the sending or beneficiary organisation retains responsibility for programme eligibility, funding and formal recognition, while Alpha coordinates the services and placement arrangements agreed with you.
Ask us about tailor-made programmes for Erasums+, VET Mobility, PCTO and other international education and training projects.
Start planning your mobility in Malta
Whether you are an individual participant, school, college, vocational training organisation or mobility coordinator, talk to us about what you would like your placement to achieve.
Tell us:
- your proposed dates and duration
- your vocational or study area
- your mobility programme
- your age
- your English level
- your intended learning outcomes
- whether you are travelling individually or as part of a group
We will then advise you on suitable placement options and the next steps.
