The Second World War in Malta & Its British History 1798-1979
Description Activity price options
Malta has a long-standing and friendly relationship with Great Britain and over the years their rich histories have been interwoven within the Commonwealth. Britain ruled the islands before independence and this informative tour looks at the impact that the British had on Malta from 1798 to 1979. This excursion particularly focuses on the intense battles during World War Two where this steadfast island remained a brave and strong ‘rock’, suffering, size for size, more bombing raids than anywhere else in Europe. As a result the island and its people were awarded the George Cross by King George VI in 1942. During the day you will visit Air Raid shelters in Vittoriosa; admire the immense Grand Harbour, which was used as a former British military base, from the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta; wander around the fascinating War Museum at Fort St. Elmo, as well as see other important sites related to this era. Free-time will be built into the day for you to buy yourself some lunch and explore Valletta a little further. If you are interested in history and would like to improve your English skills at the same time then this excursion is the perfect mix for you.
